A SPANISH-PORTUGUESE PAINTED AND CARVED WOOD CRISTO MORTO CRUCIFIX, PROBABLY PORTUGUESE, 18TH/19TH CENTURY, the sensitively carved figure of Christ with limp head resting on his chest and nicely detailed closed eyes, ashen thin face and lifeless expression, sculpted with long wavy hair and beard ending in small curls, wearing a Crown of Thorns and attached with a later repoussé metal halo, above his emaciated torso and waist wrapped in a gilt trimmed white loincloth while suspended from his stretched arms and hands nailed to the cross over his realistically rendered legs bent at knees and nailed through crossed feet, heightened and expanded red-painted rivulets of blood dripping from wounds and pooling into matching faux stones, mounted on an associated painted branch cross embellished with shaped turquoise and pink coral jewels, surmounted by a carved billowing "INRI" banner. Height: 21 1/2" Width: 9" Note: This figure of Christ exhibits many if not most of the sensitive and accomplished abilities found in the works by Portuguese sculptors of religious figures. While perhaps not made for a bishop's private chapel, the details, in general, are still good. This sculptor knew the human body and believed in the suffering of Christ and what it stood for which he successfully portrays to us through his positioning of the body, its' details, and facial expression. Unfortunately, the 20th-century cross and more recent "jeweling" with dramatic overpainting of the blood as well as painted restorations, so prevalent in other countries, robs this moving figure of its original moving intentions.
Condition
Good condition with normal surface buildup in areas throughout, paint craquelure, expected age cracks, worn and flaking areas, right hand is lacking one finger, some tips of Crown of Thorns are chipped, all the faux stones on Christ's figure are not original and of a much later date, the blood is much later and more excessive than original, hair and beard repainted at a later date. INRI banner is probably original with the Christ figure. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
