Later 19th century, inks and mineral pigments on paper, the seated, exquisitely-painted couple formally dressed in the height of court fashion and staring impassively out at the viewer; the mandarin wearing an elaborately-embroidered and fur-trimmed collar and navy blue robe with a silver pheasant rank badge denoting him as a fifth-rank civil official, further depicted with a pearl, coral, and jade necklace, a court hat with jade finial, and Manchu boots, his wife even more highly adorned, her fur-trimmed scarlet robe fully embroidered with stylized dragons, clouds, and waves, on her chest a silver pheasant rank badge echoing that of her husband's, on her head an elaborate headdress hung with strands of pearls and rubies strung with jade shou symbols and flowers, around her neck strands of coral, spinach and celadon jade beads; both are seated on carved, painted, and silk-backed chairs placed on floral rugs, both images stamped with red artist seals, both framed in Chinese red lacquer frames with inner gilt band, on the reverse vintage labels from "Jean Bohne Inc. Art Dealers / 17 East 48th St. New York," under one of which is the framing date of May 4, 1962. Images: 56.25" H X 30.25" W; overall: 58.25" X 32.25".
