Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercie (French, 1845-1916) "David" sculpture, circa 1875, warm black-brown patinated bronze, signed in cast "A. MERCIE". 29" H x 19" W x 12" D.
Provenance: From a private Rye, NY collection.
Note: Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercie was born in Toulouse, France in 1845 and educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At age 23, he won the Grand Prix de Rome. A nude version of this sculpture won the first class medal at the Salon of 1872. The present lot is an example of the Barbedienne casting, in which David wears a loincloth, produced in several sizes. The original lifesize model is in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, Inv. No. ChB 509.
