Early 1980s found object sculpture by artist Jimmie Durham (American; 1940-2021). Unsigned. Sculpture is composed of a muffler, feathers, string, cowry shells, bone, beads, leather, and rope. The muffler is painted with graphic designs and symbols. Rectangle located at bottom right of muffler is painted with the words, "Bedia 3006-11-4 / Site B-LOT6-34 / H-5296 (A) Whit Plane."
The reference to Bedia would place this work among the works Durham created as faux artifacts uncovered by a Jose Bedia, a character Durham created as an explorer and archaeologist from the future. These works were meant as a way to critique past ethnographers and archaeologists and their misunderstanding of indigenous artifacts and culture.
