Arnold Edward Shives was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Shives studied art history at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (1962-1964); painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, California (B.F.A. 1964 - 1966); and painting at Stanford University, Palo Alto (M.A. 1966 - 1968).
He returned to Vancouver in 1968. Working in oil, watercolour, graphite, colour etching, silkscreen, linocut, and monotype, he did subjects that include mountain landscapes and floral still life in an abstract, ominous style. He also works in painted plywood wall reliefs.
He is an accomplished mountaineer and hikes in Howe Sound, Georgia Strait and on Comox Glacier on Vancouver Island (1988). He lives in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He received Canada Council awards in 1975, 1976 and 1977, and held solo exhibitions at the BAG in 1975 and 1994, and AGGV in 1983.
His work is in the collections of the CCAB, NGC, New York Public Library in New York City, SFU, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California.
