WALT KUHN (AMERICAN 1877-1949) Double Sided Drawing: Dancer with a Sleeping Cat; The Performers, 1934 watercolor on paper 50.8 x 35.5 cm (20 x 14 in.) signed and dated lower left
LOT NOTES Walter Kuhn played a pivotal role in the introduction of European Modernism to the United States. As one of the founders of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors (AAPS), an organization interested in promoting the work of contemporary American and European artists, Kuhn intended to have the AAPS lead the public taste in art, rather than follow it. Together with Arthur B. Davies, Kuhn traveled to the metropolises of France, England and Germany to recruit artists for what would become the infamous 1913 Armory Show, and personally secured the works of his friends Henri Matisse (Blue Nude, Madrass Rouge) and Marcel Duchamp (Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2) for the exhibition. Kuhn himself was among the artists represented in the landmark event, and his work (particularly his bold portraits of stage performers) can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many others.
