PROVENANCE

Collection of the Family of Senator Hugh Scott after 1994.
LOT NOTES
Affixed to the back of the present painting, "The Dog Catcher" are photographs of the Senator with Lado Gudiashivili, at the time of the purchase of the painting. Senator Scott was an influential Republican Senator in the United States Senate, serving in the Senate from 1959-1977 after nearly 20 years serving the House of Represenatativers. He served as the Senate Minority Leader from 1969-1977. A strong internationalist as a politician, an avid art collector, and author of an imporant book about Tang Dynasty Art "The Golden Age of Chinese Art", it is unsurprising that Scott would venture into Soviet Georgia, and take pains to meet one of the country's most important artists. "The Dog Catcher, painted seven years after Gudiashvili's return from Paris to Tbilisi, demonstrates Gudiashvili's strength as an artist in its whirlwind lyrical composition and subtle brushwork, as well as Gudiashvili's love of storytelling.
