HENRI MATISSE (FRENCH 1869-1954) Ex-libris of Count Mikhail Keller, 1911 color lithograph on paper 7.5 x 5.5 cm (3 x 2 1/8 in.) signed in plate
PROVENANCE Collection of Erikh Feodorovich Gollerbakh, Saint Petersburg, until 1942 Collection of A. S. Sokolin, Saint Petersburg, until 1989
LOT NOTES Count Mikhail Pavlovich Keller (1883-1957) gathered an extensive library of several thousands of valuable and important volumes, to one of which the present lot was attached. In 1911 Count Keller married Ekaterina Shchukina, a daughter of Sergey Ivanovich Shchukin, a famous collector and businessman. Shukin was among the first to discover the genius of Henri Matisse. In 1909 he commissioned two monumental decorative paintings - the world famous Dance and Music, both of which hung on the staircase of Shchukin`s house in Moscow until the Revolution. The association between the artist and his patron continued for a long time, resulting in a further acquisition of 35 more paintings by Shchukin, which allowed Matisse to buy the only house he had ever owned throughout his life. In 1912 Henri Matisse sent two drawings of ex-libris design for Ivan Sergeyevich Schukin, his patron`s son. Ivan selected one of the plates and gave the other one to his brother in law, Mikhail Keller.
