PROVENANCE Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California Estate of Jack and Belle Linsky
LOT NOTES Jack Linsky was an exceptionally successful and wealthy manufacturer of stapling machines and office stationery (including the ubiquitous "Swingline" brand of staplers). Along with his wife Belle, they were major buyers of European art beginning from the end of World War II. Two years after the passing of Jack Linsky, his wife Belle donated their collection of paintings to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1982. Even at that time, the gift was valued at more $60 million and created a permanent gallery at the Met. This did not come as a surprise, as their uncanny ability to discern masterpieces and buy selectively (even if having to pay record prices for the times) was a hallmark of their collection.
