PROVENANCE
Collection of Chester Dale, New York, NY (label on verso)
LOT NOTES
According to the label on verso, the present lot comes from the famous Chester Dale Collection. Chester Dale (1883-1962) built his fortune working for the New York Stock Exchange. He chose to invest in the acquisition of miscellaneous assets, until he married Maud Murray, a painter and art critic, in 1910. Murray introduced her husband to the idea of collecting art, which eventually became the passion of Dale`s life. His rapidly growing collection of 19th and 20th-century French paintings soon included works by Corot, Monet, Matisse, Picasso and Dali. He considered establishing a private museum, but in 1941, decided to donate a part of his collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. After Chester Dale`s death, the National Gallery of Art obtained over 3,000 items including artworks and reference materials. The Chester Dale Collection is now part of the permanent exhibition of the museum, taking up six galleries on the main floor of the building.
