EXHIBITED
Artist`s Union of the USSR, 1931 (label on verso)
Born in 1870 into a peasant family in present-day Mordovia (a defining factor of his oeuvre), Fedot Sychkov took a keen interest to art from an early age. Though initially trained as an icon and fresco painter, Sychkov is best known for his lively portraits of young peasant women and cheerful scenes of village life. Much like the Philip Maliavin Laughing Village Baba presented in this sale, Sychkov`s portrait of a Young Mordvinian Girl is executed in vibrant yellows, reds, and greens. From the softly-modeled face of the girl, engulfed by sunflower and carnation blossoms, to the bright impasto highlights, this work presents a fine example of Sychkov`s developed style.
