LOT NOTES
The historical Sukharev Tower, built in Moscow in 1692-95 by order of Peter the Great, was demolished in 1934 under the Soviet authorities by the order of Lazar Kaganovich. Lenin is remarked to have said about the flea market which existed around the tower since the 19th century, that it was a "breeding ground of speculation." In this painting, Lakhovsky masterfully captures the figures and atmosphere of the market with great attention to detail and sense of surrounding.
