LOT NOTES
The present lot is a rare and important example of Andre Lhote`s early work. The artist studied sculpture at Bordeux Academy of Fine Arts, putting a brush in his hand mostly for amusement until 1905, when he decided to fully focus on painting and give up sculpture. The following year, Lhote permanently moved to Paris in order to establish his own painting studio. During this time, Fauvism was the most popular style, and it immediately made a big impact on Lhote`s developing artistic manner. Another great impression on the artist was the work of Paul Cezanne, especially the paintings presented during master`s 1907 retrospective exhibition at the Salon d`Automne. This event was also a major influence on the pioneers of Cubism, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.
Painted in 1910, the present lot was sold during Andre Lhote`s first solo exhibition at the Galerie Druet, just four years after the artist decided to become a painter and relocate to Paris. `Nus devant le fleuve` is a perfect example of artist`s early, Fauvist manner of painting, as it was created at the very edge of Lhote`s stylistical transition into Cubism, shown by vivid colors with complex yet perfectly balanced composition. The curves of the bodies and overall setting remain relatively subtle, unlike the works created a couple of years later, which are drastically different both in composition and color solutions. Only one year after painting the present lot, Lhote joined the Section d`Or art group, pursuing his interest in abstract art and focusing on analytical cubism from that point on.
