ALEKSANDRA YEGOROVNA MAKOVSKAYA (RUSSIAN 1837-1915) Girl on a Country Lane, 1888 oil on board 22.2 x 16.2 cm (8 3/4 x 6 3/8 in.) signed and dated lower right
LOT NOTES Alexandra Makovskaya was eldest child of the Makovsky family of artists, the sister of Konstantin, Nikolai, and Vladimir, who all became artists as well under the encouragement of their father Yegor Makovsky, one of the founders of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (later the Surikov Art Institute). Alexandra exhibited her paintings at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1866, and also exhibited with the Peredvizhniki ("Wanderers") group of artists from 1878-1893. The present painting, dated 1888, is from the period of the Peredvizhniki and is a fine example of the homegrown Russian realism for which that group was known.
