A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND THE HARROWING OF HELL, STROGANOV SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY
Featuring two scenes of the Resurrection, both showing a figure of Christ surrounded by an oval mandorla pierced with golden rays of divine light. The central scene depicts the Harrowing of Hell, where Jesus is shown over the black hollow of the inferno, trampling upon the broken gates to hell, surrounded by two mountains in the background that were torn apart by the abyss. At his sides are the kneeling figures of Adam and Eve rising from the dead. The Old Testament kings, David and Solomon, with St. John the Baptist, and prophets follow at Christ`s side. Below, Satan is shown chained by two angels and will remain restrained until the Second Coming. The lower right of the panel presents the scene of Jesus standing on a closed tomb with one hand raised in a benedictory gesture and in the other he holds a scroll of the gospels. Roman guards appear beside him, seemingly agitated. Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood panel with a kovcheg. One insert splint on the back. 30.4 x 25.6 cm (12 x 10 1/8 in.)
