A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE PROTECTING VEIL OF THE VIRGIN, 19TH CENTURY

the upper register featuring the scene taking place at Hagia Sophia, the Virgin Orans stands opening her veil, the apostles and Church Fathers depicted gathering around her, led by Peter, Paul and the archangels; beneath them, Romanos the Melodist holds the text of his hymn, surrounded by selected saints. Egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on a wood panel; two insert splints on the back (both missing); 36 x 31.7 cm (14 1/8 x 12 1/2 in.)
