A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW SCHOOL, CIRCA 1750
depicting the intercession of the Mother of God, shown in three-quarters view, before Christ in the upper register and the Mother of God surrounded by saints, including King Leo VI the Wise and the Patriarch Tarasios of Constantinople in the lower register, a narrative typically included at this time by painters of the Moscow school. This type of iconographic image, known as the pokrov of the Mother of God or Theotokos, translated literally, refers to a shroud, but is understood to mean the intercession of Mary on behalf of the faithful and is commemorated by the Feast of Intercession. Egg tempera, gesso and gold leaf on wood panel with kovcheg. Two insert splints on the back. 31.2 x 26.5 cm (12 1/4 x 10 7/16 in.)
