A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST IN A BASMA OKLAD, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
the Virgin Mary depicted next to the newborn Christ in the center of the icon, surrounded by various Nativity scenes, such as: the rushing shepherds in the upper left, Saint Joseph and the Old Man dressed in furs standing before him, the scene of the Dripping of Water on the Divine Child, an angel of the Lord announcing the news to a shepherd in the upper right, the adoration of Magi in the lower left and the Flight to Egypt in the lower right. The basma oklad with a scrolling foliate design. Egg tempera and gesso on wood panel with a double kovcheg.
