A RUSSIAN ICON OF DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD IN A GILT SILVER OKLAD, MARKED SE, MOSCOW, 1830S
Virgin Mary`s body is shown in the center, surrounded by the mourning apostles, with resurrected Christ by her side. In the foreground, an angel cuts off the hands of the impious priest who wants to turn over the bier. Mary`s house and the Temple of Jerusalem are seen on background. The upper register depicts the ascension of the enthroned mother of god into the heavens, with the angels greeting her at the gates of paradise. The gilt silver oklad features chased and repousse floral motif on the border, applied sunburst haloes, and two enamel appliques (one missing). The oklad marked SE in Cyrillic, with dated assayer`s mark ND 1834, Moscow town mark, 84 standard. Egg tempera, gold leaf, and gesso on a wood panel with a kovcheg.
