A MONUMENTAL RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS THE WONDERWORKER, CENTRAL SCHOOL, FIRST HALF OF 17TH C.
Standing at full height, the Saint is depicted holding a closed Gospel in both hands. He is shown in episcopal vestments, wearing the cross-adorned omophorion. The firmness of the face, the high, furrowed forehead, the large, concentrating eyes - his entire face presents the Saint as a stout defender of the Christian faith. Egg tempera and gesso on a wood panel, kovcheg with a raised border, 89.5 x 30.5 cm (35 1/4 x 12 in.)
