In the 2000s the emergence of Shen Jingdong at a time of renaissance in Chinese contemporary art ushered in a new era. Shen Jingdong offers a definitive example of commercialized aesthetics in Chinese pop art. Through his work, he reveals his innermost thoughts, hidden in metaphors and humor.
Jingdong studied Fine Arts at Nanjing Xiaozhuang University and the Nanjing Academy of Art, after his studies he enlisted in the Chinese army where he was embedded in the theater group until 2007. He tried various conceptual and performing arts in the 1990s, influenced by Dadaism and pop art. In 2006, his work 'Hero Number 12' was exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, the most famous National Art Museum in China. His art received numerous accolades for its pursuit of tenderness, along with its commercialized ideological characteristics. As of 2007, exhibitions of his works have been held in Hong Kong and New York, and his performances were held in the United States, Italy, the Republic of Korea, Japan and France. In 2008, his Chinese and international art career evolved rapidly; Shen became an important contemporary new wave artist with his "Hero" series. Amid the urbanization and globalization taking place in China, Shen Jingdong can be seen in his works as a witness to the changes brought by globalization. Amidst the strengthening of ideology and the oppression of freedom that coincides with globalization, his work opens a new way out. Through the harmony of the realm of imagination and reality, he constructs his own fairy tales. His painting "The Bugle" made in 2012 perfectly illustrates his work, allowing each viewer to have a new look at contemporary art, but also an intellectual, sensitive and emotional reflection and interpretation. Shen's artworks can be seen in public and private collections around the world. The artist's success in the market was already shown in his homeland in 2013 when his painting "Three Great Men", sold at Beijing Googut & Auction for £154,000, Shen's record auction price to date. In addition, at Sotheby's international auction house in 2018, his painting "Strength" sold for over £79,000.
