- Lot Description
Reliquary. Italy, XVII century. Ebonized wood complemented with silver colors. Measurements: 64'5 x 26 cm. The reliquary sits on a rectangular molded foot. On this foot there is a small shaft. It is decorated with vegetal motifs and grotesques, carved and gilded. The reliquary itself presents again a rectangular profile, in which a gilded wood applique representing a little angel is placed on the wood. The center of the reliquary presents a rectangular receptacle, a small window with a molded frame that allows to see an oil on copper representing a saint, possibly Saint Joseph with the child Jesus in his arms, called the saint of Silence. Below, there is a tondo with the image of the Virgin. The work is crowned with a belfry from which a gilded wooden applique in the form of an angel and an eagle, also gilded, in the pediment. Finally, the work is crowned with a cross on grotesques, which harmonizes with those at the base of the reliquary. The subject matter represented in this reliquary is approached from a more intimate point of view, full of eloquent gestures, without the triumphalist character of the more official baroque, through a gaze that seeks to make the faithful identify with the scene, to be moved by what they see.
