Italian or Spanish school of the seventeenth century. Follower of ANNIBALE CARRACCI (Bologna, 1560 - Rome, 1609). "The coronation of thorns". Oil on canvas. Relined. With losses in the polychrome and restorations. Measurements: 61 x 75 cm. The work in question is a close continuation of the painting "The Scorn of Christ", painted by Annibale Carracci around 1596, today kept in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. In turn, there are other copies made by different artists, such as the canvas currently housed in the Museo del Prado, painted by Andrea Sacchi in the seventeenth century, with the same morphological characteristics as the original by Carracci. The theme of the mockery of Christ by several Roman soldiers and executioners, narrated in the New Testament (in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark), had great diffusion in the arts. The author of the present painting reduces to the maximum the narrative of the scene, presenting Christ already with the crown of thorns on his head, just placed by an executioner. Behind him, on a neutral background that highlights the corpulence of those represented, especially the figure of Christ, emerges a soldier in armor. It is a work heir to Caravaggesque tenebrism, in which the focus of light falls directly on the figure of Christ and on the back of the executioner, while the face of the latter, and practically that of the other soldier, are covered by a sober tone that barely allows his features to be discerned.
