Florentine work, following models of the XVI century, second half of the XIX century. Ebonized carved wood, lapis lazuli and jasper. Measurements: 81 x 38 x 18,5 cm. Frame made of ebonized wood of architectural conception that presents a classicist-inspired design. The frames are supported on a rectangular base, supported on four legs, from which a foot gives way to a structure as a lectern. On this structure is the March itself, flanked by two marbled columns, in composite style, that is to say, with capitals combining acanthus leaves with volutes. The frame itself is decorated with geometric compartments combining blue and earth tones. On this structure there is a sort of entablature decorated with two urns on the sides, two scrolls and a central gable. In an area of the frame there is a small cartouche with the legend; Ora et Labora, the undisputed motto of the order of Saint Benedict. For centuries, hard stone furniture was considered the most luxurious and valuable piece of furniture, maintained in all collections and noble houses in spite of changes in fashion. This Renaissance technique had its origin in the discoveries of Roman archaeological remains, bringing the scholars of the time closer to the special taste for marbles and rare stones of imperial Rome. This Renaissance interest in the cult of rare and precious materials, which is identified with the Mannerist trend, led them, together with the latent desire to emulate classical Rome, to practice the art of "commesso", that is, the inlaying or inlaying of marbles and hard stones, which is none other than the Roman "opus sectile".
