- Lot Description
Flemish school, 18th century. "Landscape with figures". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 58 x 67 cm. 72 x 81 cm (frame). During the seventeenth century there was a break with the religious themes in the visual arts, being relegated to the background to make way for the themes of landscape and genre. In particular, there was a profusion of landscape representations in the northern countries, in which the natural wealth was shown through a great chromatic diversity. This development was due in part to the boom in collecting during the 18th century. In this case, we are faced with a gallant scene in which nature predominates in a remarkable way in front of the two characters shown in the foreground of the composition. On a mountainous step and framed by two lateral trees, two figures of peasants chat in the middle of a leafy forest behind a lake with an architecture in the distance. On the other hand, the chromatic distribution in the different planes is evident, being used to a great extent the brown color for the closest ones, the greens star in the intermediate zone, while the blues predominate in the farthest escapes. The great development of exuberant vegetation was often used for the representation of everyday life, being the best frame for the peasant representations.
