Dutch school, ca. 1520. CLAUS BERG Circle (Lübeck, Germany, 1475 - Güstrow, Germany, 1535). "St. Peter the Apostle." Oak carving, with traces of polychrome. Attached certificate issued by Carles Espinalt. Measurements: 90 cm (height). According to Carles Espinalt in his study, the work in question shows characteristics that allow us to place it within the group of works of the so-called Master of "The penetrating gaze", which is related to the sculptor Claus Berg, being able to date it to a date close to 1520. It is a piece only worked on its front part, which reveals its origin as an altarpiece image. Saint Peter wears a magnificent robe, which plays an outstanding role in the final composition of the carving, with broken folds and moving contours. Espinalt continues "An essential factor in the image is the execution of the head, with special care in the treatment of the hair and beard. The artist achieves a penetrating expressiveness in the eyes, with a gesture of surprise. Another very peculiar feature of the Master of "The penetrating look" is the elongation of the figure, as a result of the enormous size of the legs, resulting disproportionate. The polychrome is reduced to the flesh tones of the face and feet (the hands with the attribute have disappeared). The composition of the sculpture, in general terms, follows the schemes of the St. Andrew preserved in the Cleveland Museum Art and the series of apostles for the church of Neeroeteren".
