Dutch or French school; late seventeenth century. "The court of miracles". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents damages in the painting. Measurements: 67.5 x 61.5 cm; 83.5 x 77.5 cm (frame). The court of the miracles was a French term that referred to the slums of the city of Paris, where the unemployed immigrants of the rural areas resided. These areas grew to a great extent during the reign of Louis XIV (1643 - 1715). This conception served as inspiration for Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. In pre-modern Paris, a large part of the population depended on begging for survival. Since those with a clear disability could expect more handouts, several beggars feigned terrible injuries and illnesses. When they returned to their homes in the slum, they left their characters. A beggar who had pretended to be blind or crippled all day could see or walk again in the slum. This phenomenon gave the generic name to these areas where so many "miracles" occurred every day. In this work the author reflects that moment in which those most disadvantaged have left their labor, or begging to return and count their earnings, for that reason in the lower right area a large booty is appreciated. The brightness of the shining jewels brings a certain splendor to a scene conceived from a tenebrist illumination, which is subordinated to the color of the torch and the brightness of this same one, leaving the rest of the scene in semidarkness. In the work we can see a multitude of characters representing different archetypes, all of them coming from the lower classes of society.
