In this work highlights the quality and delicacy of the carving that is defined through curved lines, such as those seen in the oval that defines the perimeter of the face, the hair, or even the folds of the robe worn by the protagonist, although it is true that in this case more angular forms are appreciated, which provide a greater volume to the carving. It should be noted that the city of Cordoba has a great tradition in religious representation, having a great school of image makers, who make their carvings both for the official religious sphere, as well as for private and personal devotion. Arranged on a rocky pedestal is the figure of a young man, whose shells in the upper part of his costume indicate his pilgrimage. The young man carries a staff in one hand and a fish in the other, attributes that identify him as the archangel Saint Raphael.
Saint Raphael the Archangel is one of the seven archangels who is before the throne of God. He is known as the healing Archangel, for his divine intervention with the character Tobias, whom he healed of a blindness. He is usually represented with a fishing rod, next to a fish or with the rod of the pilgrims, an attribute that identifies him as the patron of travelers because, with his help, he guides in spiritual journeys in search of truth and knowledge. It is probable that, in representing the fish in the sculpture, characteristic of the iconography of the archangel, he alludes to the religious passage that narrates the encounter between St. Raphael and Tobias. In the deuterocanonical book of Tobit or Tobit the story of the two who share this name in the Bible, father and son, is told. The latter is accompanied by the Archangel Raphael, sent by God to help him, on a journey from which he returns with remedies (extracted from a fish that the archangel makes him catch in the waters of the Tigris River) for the blindness of his father Tobias and to scare away the demon that killed all the men Rachel married.
