FINE AND RARE NEW YORK 'TASSEL-BACK' CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIR
American (New York), c. 1770, mahogany. The splat of Chinese tassel influence above an embroidered seat, raised on cabriole legs of ball-and-claw feet in front and back legs of Dutch footing, the interior of the seat carved VIII (for the eighth chair constructed in the series).
The tasseled splat of this chair recalls what are known as "Van Rensselaer" chairs, coined for the New York family known to own differing sets of the "tassel-back" model. These spade-shaped splats were cut from similar or identical templates, with typical variations in the aprons, knees, and the modeling of the back legs.
