“Earthrise” is among the most memorable photographs of the 20th century and one of the most iconic images taken on NASA’s Apollo missions. From December 21 to 27, 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders became the first humans to reach the moon. Apollo 8 orbited the moon ten times, and the crew were the first to witness an “Earthrise.” The Apollo 8 astronauts saw this absolutely breathtaking view of the rising Earth as their capsule emerged from behind the moon. NASA issued many color Type 1 photos to the media, but black and white images such as this are exceedingly rare by comparison. As opposed to color, the black and white photography serves to enhance the drama of the moment, stressing the enigmatic darkness of space and the vast distance between the moon and Earth. The front of the photo shows stunning contrast and has wide white borders. The reverse of the photo has the original printed National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Peter Van Miert credit stamps and caption. Measures 10" by 8" including borders.
