A prototype of basketball’s perfect big man, the Big Dipper seemingly dunked, swatted and corralled boards at will from the moment he stepped on the court. His brief stardom in college as a Kansas Jayhawk was soon eclipsed by his dominance at the highest level with the Philadelphia Warriors – highlighted, of course, by Wilt’s unfathomable 100-point game in 1962. His NBA career intertwined with perhaps the greatest competitor in sports history, the late Bill Russell. Alas, the two larger-than-life basketball gods can finally continue their epic on-court battles in perpetuity.
Offered here is an extraordinary signed version of Wilt's "In Action" rookie card from the 1961 Fleer Basketball set. The card fittingly showcases his enormous size and strength as he sends home a two-handed jam. The key feature of this particular example is on the back, however, where Wilt has penned his flowing signature above his name in bold blue ballpoint pen. He added the inscription "Happy New Year" and even dated it "1-8-76" (year verified by PSA) at the bottom of his bio paragraph.
Just three "In Action" #47 examples exist with Wilt's autograph across the entire PSA population report, and this one boasts the highest card grade with a PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 assessment. PSA/DNA deemed His signature and inscription are graded an 8 by PSA/DNA. It should be noted that last year Wilt's 1961 Fleer #8 card in PSA VG-EX 4 with a 9 auto grade sold at auction for $276,000. Finding the #47 card signed is twice as rare, as there are six signed #8 cards in the PSA pop. Owning an early Wilt signed RC with a dated Happy New Year inscription a week removed from what we can only imagine was a wild 12/31/1975 night? Well, that's about as 1-of-1 of an opportunity as the card itself!
