- Lot Description
Ernie Barnes might be the only artist who went to school on a football scholarship. After graduating with a fine arts degree from North Carolina College at Durham, Barnes played pro football for half a dozen seasons before he returned to art full time where he honed his signature painting style of capturing movement and elongated figures. As a former pro athlete, Barnes was the perfect choice to commission a portrait of Willie Mays to commemorate his MVP season in 1965.
This 1-of-1 original oil on canvas painting measures 24” x 36” and depicts Mays as he watches one of his home run shots sail into the night sky. Barnes’ trademark style is on full display, with the movement of Mays’ at-bat perfectly captured. The painting's colors remain bold and bright. A copyright "1965 Ernie Barnes" artist signature is located on the bottom right corner. The piece comes in a rustic wood frame (overall dims 31.5" x 43.5") that complements the vintage artwork quite well. A masterful portrait of Willie Mays from his MVP season by one of the most successful artists of his time, a fellow African American who could relate to the civil rights obstacles that the Sey Hey Kid faced during his rise to fame.
“Willie Mays” 1965 is now included in the Ernie Barnes Catalogue Raisonné. We thank Luz Rodriguez at the Ernie Barnes Estate for her assistance in cataloguing this work. We must note some spot staining from an unknown substance (not mold) on the surface. According to Mrs. Rodriguez, this can safely be cleaned and removed without harming the original coating of paint.
