- Lot Description
Presented here is an incredibly scarce 1911 Turkish Trophies advertising display with a Ty Cobb L1 Leather and Christy Mathewson S81 Silk. It is easily one of the most striking and desirable point-of-sale ad displays in the tobacco and baseball card category ever produced. The 16.5" by 33" original frame has a center panel promoting "Some of the many designs on leather, satin and card mounts given for gift slips packed with Turkish Trophies." Tobacco outfits Helmar and Turkey Red both offered these ornate and carefully-crafted, oversized premiums during the 1911-12 period with redemption coupons packaged with their products. While the baseball subjects are the most coveted by present-day collectors, other themes were available and when found these displays typically contained a mix of all.
This particular display currently presents with the original frame and components intact, and now hosting a rare 1912 Ty Cobb L1 leather, a 1910 Joe Tinker T3 Turkey Red cabinet card, and a 1911 Christy Mathewson S81 silk. Both the cabinet and silk are held in place by mounting corners and display in EX or better shape, although without a visual of the backs their complete conditions are unknown. The Cobb leather appears EX-MT with no visible wear; however, we are unsure of the method by which it is secured on the display. The front of the Ty Cobb L1 leather has exceptional eye appeal and is one of the better conditioned examples we have encountered. A rare offering of a high-grade original ad display with strong condition examples of a notable trio of Hall of Famers highlighted by the scarce Ty Cobb leather.
