Rookie sensation Mickey Mantle began the 1951 season struggling to adjust to life as a big leaguer. After some time back in the minors, Mantle returned to the Yankees in time to help the club clinch their third consecutive pennant. Facing the Giants one day after their thrilling "Shot Heard Round the World" win in the playoffs, Mickey Mantle hit a fly ball out in his first at-bat but drew a walk in his second plate appearance to load up the bases with two outs. That brought up Phil Rizzuto, who hit a grounder to Whitey Lockman at first. That is the exact moment in time this newly discovered Type 1 photo captures. Lockman then flipped the ball to Dave Koslo, who covered first to end the inning. The Giants would win Game 1 by a score of 5-1, but they ultimately lost to the Yankees in six. Mickey Mantle would go on to run the bases in 11 more World Series, and this image captures his first time on base in the Fall Classic.
The Type 1 photo measures 7x9" and has taken on a warm tone from age. There is edge wear present on the white border and some creasing present, particularly along the top edge. The back has the original caption slug affixed along with an Acme News Pictures stamp and some light staining from storage. The photo has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA and comes with an additional LOA.
