This remarkable and one-of-a-kind ball brings together two of the greatest ballplayers of the 1960s: Mickey Mantle and Denny McLain. The inscription on the ball reveals a significant date shared by both players. “9/19/68” was the date of game between the Yankees and Tigers in Detroit. Mantle was playing out the last weeks of his long career and McLain was attempting to make baseball history by winning his 31st game of the season. The Tigers ace was cruising along with a 6-1 lead in the 8th when the veteran Mantle hit a solo home run to deep right field, the 535th of his career. McLain would hold on to win the game and become the last pitcher in the majors to post 31 victories. The Mick would homer just one last time before he retired at the end of the ’68 season. The Yankees legend has signed this Rawlings Official American League ball in ballpoint pen twice along with the inscription “536 HRs” and again with “535th HR.” McLain signed an adjacent panel and added the notation, “9/19/68” and “31st Win.” A wonderful, signed ball marking a special day in both men’s careers. The ball shows light toning from age and the signatures are crisp and display nicely. The ball comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
