- Lot Description
Ernie Barnes might be the only artist who went to school on a football scholarship. After graduating with a fine arts degree from North Carolina College at Durham, Barnes played pro football for half a dozen seasons before he returned to art full time where he honed his signature painting style of capturing movement and elongated figures. As a former pro athlete, Barnes was the perfect choice to commission a portrait of Willie Mays to commemorate his MVP season in 1965. The painting measures 24” x 36” and depicts Mays as he watches one of his home run shots sail into the night sky. Barnes’ trademark style is on full display, with the movement of Mays’ at-bat perfectly captured. The paintings colors remain bold and bright and has been framed in a complimentary wood frame that does not distract from the masterful painting inside. A wonderful portrait of Willie Mays in his MVP season by one of the most successful African American fine artists.
