After fleeing to Europe, Jack Johnson continued to defend his World Heavyweight title overseas. This stunning and rare Type 3 gelatin-silver photograph depicts the boxing legend during his European exile. Johnson poses in a terrific turn-of-the-century boxing stance, his powerful physique highlighted all the more by the neutral white background. The reverse of the photos has a hand written notation in French which translates to, “Jack Johnson who meets this evening Moran at Vélodrome d'Hiver.” This is referring to the June 27, 1914, fight against American Frank Moran in Paris. The 36 year-old Johnson beat Moran on points, retaining his World Heavyweight Champion title. The Type 3 print measures 5” x 7” and has been printed to its edges. The reverse has the previously referenced notation as well as the M. Rol Paris photographer’s credit stamp. Encapsulated Type III by PSA/DNA.
