John Tyler was elected as William Henry Harrison’s vice president in the 1840 election. However, Harrison died just 31 days after taking office, propelling Tyler to take his place as the 10th president of the United States – the first time this occurred in American history. Tyler was a proponent of manifest destiny, the belief that America was entitled to annex all the land between the two oceans. During Tyler’s presidency from 1841-1845, the United States annexed the Texas territory and saw the beginning of western expansion. The rapid growth in the nation’s size was matched by its importance in international trade, as this signed 1843 Ships Pass demonstrates. Tyler has signed this document in sharp fountain pen. The document has been matted with an attractive portrait print of the 10th president and an engraved plaque listing his major lifetime achievements. The complete framed display measures 28” x 33.5” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
