Almost exactly a year to the day this photograph was taken, Gene Tunney had defeated Jack Dempsey in ten rounds by unanimous decision to take the title of World Heavyweight Champion. In one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history, the two met again on September 22, 1927, at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Tunney dominated the first six rounds, but in the seventh, Dempsey landed a series of punches that sent Tunney to the canvas. Instead of returning to a neutral corner, Dempsey stood close to Tunney, delaying the referee’s count and giving his opponent precious time to collect himself. Tunney recovered and won the fight by a unanimous decision. This gave the second Dempsey-Tunney fight the name “The Long Count Fight.”
This Type 1 photo captures Tunney landing a right to Dempsey’s head. The photo measures 8” x 10” and has been printed to its edges. The reverse has the Wide World Photos credit stamp along with the original caption slug and many hand written notations and catalog numbers. A rare and aesthetically pleasing Type 1 photo of one of the most famous fights in boxing history. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
