From 1986 to 2005, NBA legend Magic Johnson held an All-Star charity basketball game called "A Mid-Summer Night's Magic." The 1991 game, played at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood on August 4th, raised funds for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and pitted Magic’s team coached by filmmaker Spike Lee against a team coached by talk show host Arsenio Hall. Magic's team won a tight contest, 182-180, when Charles Barkley tipped in the game-winning shot with 2.8 seconds left in overtime.
Offered here are the shorts Magic Johnson wore in this 1991 charity game, along with two ticket stubs from our consignor who attended. The red, white, and blue MacGregor Sand-Knit shorts (size 36) have been signed by Magic in black marker on the left thigh above blue UNCF decals. The shorts display ample wear with some sweat staining in the crotch. The two 8/4/1991 tickets entitled "Magic Johnson 's All-Stars Benefit U.N.C.F. Mid-Summer Night's Magic VI" are crease-free in NM condition. Magic's autograph is certified by PSA/DNA.
