On July 14, 1953, Mickey Mantle made the second All-Star Game appearance of his career, and this Type 1 news photo documents the occasion. Taken from the right field seats, the photo shows a packed to capacity Crosley Field all decked out in festive red, white, and blue banners for the All-Star Game. Down on the field, it’s the top of the 4th and Mickey Mantle has just hit a foul ball off Warren Spahn. Mantle would eventually draw a walk, but Spahn would get the win in the 5-1 National League victory.
The Type 1 photo measures 7.25” x 9" and has some light wear to the white bordered edges. The back of the photo has the remnants of the original caption slug along with several United Pictures International stamps and many printing notations. The photo comes with a LOA and has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
