During his heyday as the Giants All-Star closer, Brian Wilson used more than his jet-black beard and tattoo-exposed open collar to broadcast his big personality and get in opponents’ heads. “B-Weezy” loved to bring color and flash to his feet. In 2010, he was fined $1,000 for wearing bright orange cleats during a game against the Marlins. (MLB then released a statement that player cleats must be at least 50% of the team's primary color, which for SF is black.) Wilson joked on the Jim Rome Show that the fine was for “having too much awesome on my feet”, and he continued to push the permissible bar.
Nike took notice of Wilson’s sense of style on the mound and presented him with this offered pair of custom-designed Nike Air Show Elite cleats to wear at the 2011 MLB All-Star Game. Hand-painted by sneakerhead pop culture artist Jacob Patterson, the outers feature two different images of B-Weezy with an abstract background of infield dirt and Wilson’s likeness. His stoic face on the left has "Fear the Beard" within the Nike Swoosh. A fired-up expression on the right is accompanied by "Fine the Spikes." The original bright orange laces are present and interior Nike tagging indicates size 12.5 with the 2010 manufacturer date.
The unique 1-of-1 design can be easily photo-matched to stock images from the game (Getty 119325893 and 118948541). Wilson’s right foot was prone to excessive toe drag each pitch, and the right shoe exhibits heavy wear on the toes from this very action. The metal spikes still have dirt stuck to them and the insoles show sock sweating.
Fittingly, Wilson closed down the 2011 All-Star game by getting the final two outs for the National League, recording the save in a 5-1 victory. And he did it looking sharp in these snazzy cleats. Includes LOA signed by Brian Wilson.
Brian Wilson Collection
SCP is excited to present the Brian Wilson Collection with all items coming straight from Wilson himself. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2003 out of LSU, the 6’ 1” flame-thrower developed into a reliable big-league reliever and earned the closer’s job in 2008. Over the next four seasons, “B-Weezy” saved 163 games (most in MLB in that span) and earned three NL All-Star nods. Most importantly, he helped the Giants snap a 56-year title drought in 2010 and win their first World Series in San Francisco. Sporting a thick black beard, mohawk, tattoos and flashy cleats on the mound, Wilson was a fan favorite and true 1-of-1 with moxie, flair, and a big heart. His “Fear the Beard” mantra became a pop culture phenomenon in the Bay Area and beyond. After picking up his second World Series ring with the Giants in 2012, Wilson played his final two seasons with the Dodgers and settled in Los Angeles after retirement.
