When he was elected the 37th president of the United States in 1968, Richard Nixon became the first person to hold that office born and raised in California. The Golden State was a special place to Nixon, and one of the first actions he took upon being sworn in as president was to find a location near where he grew up in Southern California that could be used as his “Western White House.” The location chosen was a San Clemente estate adjacent to the Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Nixon set about renovating the 1926 estate to better meet the needs of a sitting president. Dated June 16, 1969, this blueprint maps out the interior alterations and furniture placement for the new Western White House. The residence enabled President Nixon to host foreign dignitaries in a more relaxed environment with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Satō being among the notables who visited. The blueprint plan has been attractively matted and framed to 30” x 37.5” measurements.
