- Lot Description
The Los Angeles Dodgers came into Game 5 of the 2020 NLCS down three games to one to the Atlanta Braves, hoping to survive for another day. The entire series was played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX (home of the Rangers) due to COVID. Ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the Braves were threatening to add more. With runners on second and third and only one out, shortstop Dansby Swanson hit a looping liner to short right field. Mookie Betts came charging in and was able to make a snazzy shoestring catch. He then threw home to nail Marcell Ozuna tagging from third. Ozuna was initially ruled safe, but instant replay reversed the call on the field, saying that he left early, so it turned into an inning-ending double play.
The Dodgers got out of the inning unscathed and eventually clawed their way back for a momentum-swinging 7-3 victory. They would avoid elimination in Game 6 as well before completing the epic 3-1 series comeback to win the NL pennant, and eventually the World Series. Betts would make two more spectacular defensive plays in Games 6 and 7, robbing both Ozuna and Freeman of home runs.
This is the very ball hit by Swansby that found Betts' glove in the 3rd inning of Game 5 for that pivotal double play. The Official 2024 World Series (Manfred Jr.) baseball exhibits abundant game use from that wild sequence. Certified by MLB Authentication (VS706491).
