- Lot Description
In 2018, Topps produced a series of Transcendent cards in extravagant designs showcasing two of the greatest Japanese baseball stars from the past and present – Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani – in various images and poses. For the latter, the signed versions represent Ohtani's most valuable and coveted rookie cards in the hobby. The 2018 Topps Transcendent Japan Autograph subset features different serial numbered versions including a standard /50 and an Emerald /10 or /3. The biggest chase cards are the Red 1/1 and Platinum 1/1 editions, the latter being the most eye-appealing premium version. In 2024, the only two PSA graded 1/1 Red sales are $55k and $36k; whereas, the four PSA graded 1/1 Platinum sales top out at $110k.
This premium "Shotime" signed rookie card is the Platinum 1/1 version of card #TASO29 in the 2018 Topps Transcendent Japan Auto issue. Within a metallic frame of shimmering gold, the photo of Ohtani from his 2018 ROY season running the bases is fitting since he just became the first 50/50 player in MLB history. Ohtani's blue pen autograph is immaculately done below the circular lens of his image.
The card is graded PSA NM-MT 8, which is exceptional when you consider how harsh graders currently evaluate these special ultra-modern releases in thick card stock. The lovely autograph received a perfect 10 rating as it should, highlighting Ohtani's meticulous attention to detail. Being a 1/1 issue, the card grade matters less than the autograph anyways. For Ohtani fans or collectors seeking the epitome of elite modern trading cards, this is an absolute stunner.
After winning his third MVP and becoming World Series champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, Ohtani continues to captivate baseball fans worldwide. As he steps back on the mound in 2025 following a one-year pitching hiatus, the comparisons to Babe Ruth will only make his legend grow as one of the all-time greats.
