During his heyday as the Giants All-Star closer, Brian Wilson used more than his jet-black beard to show his big personality and get in opponents’ heads. “B-Weezy” loved to bring color and flash to his feet. In 2010, he was fined $1,000 for wearing bright orange cleats during a game against the Marlins. (MLB then released a statement that player cleats must be at least 50% of the team's primary color, which for SF is black.) Wilson joked on the Jim Rome Show that the fine was for “having too much awesome on my feet”, and he continued to push the bar. After wearing custom cleats hand-painted by pop culture artist Jacob Patterson at the 2011 All-Star Game (see Lot 171), B-Weezy consulted the sneakerhead guru again in 2013 for some Dodger Blue-themed kicks to wear with his new team. The results, offered here and Lot 182, were stunning.
Using a pair of Wilson’s Nike Huarache 2K5 cleats, Patterson painted “HOLLYWEEZ” in large white letters on each lateral side with backgrounds of palm trees and LAPD cop cars (vintage car on the left, contemporary car on the right). Wilson’s right foot was prone to excessive toe drag while pitching, and the right shoe has worn down in that area. The metal spikes still have dirt stuck to them and the insoles show moderate sock-sweating. The original white laces are present and interior Nike tagging indicates size 12.5 with the 2007 manufacturer date of these Huarache 2K5s.
The unique 1-of-1 aspects of these special ‘Hollyweez’ cleats made it easy to visually match them to two games early in the 2014 season. The Dodgers opened in Sydney, Australia against the D-Backs on March 22nd. When they returned stateside, they played a three-game series in San Diego. Wilson wore these March 30th against the Padres (Getty 481869445) and again on April 17th against the Giants in San Francisco (Getty 489072603). Includes LOA signed by Brian Wilson.
Brian Wilson Collection
SCP is excited to present the Brian Wilson Collection with all items coming straight from Wilson himself. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2003 out of LSU, the 6’ 1” flame-thrower developed into a reliable big-league reliever and earned the closer’s job in 2008. Over the next four seasons, “B-Weezy” saved 163 games (most in MLB in that span) and earned three NL All-Star nods. Most importantly, he helped the Giants snap a 56-year title drought in 2010 and win their first World Series in San Francisco. Sporting a thick black beard, mohawk, tattoos and flashy cleats on the mound, Wilson was a fan favorite and true 1-of-1 with moxie, flair, and a big heart. His “Fear the Beard” mantra became a pop culture phenomenon in the Bay Area and beyond. After picking up his second World Series ring with the Giants in 2012, Wilson played his final two seasons with the Dodgers and settled in Los Angeles after retirement.
