During his heyday as the Giants All-Star closer, Brian Wilson used more than his jet-black beard to show his big personality and get in opponents’ heads. “B-Weezy” loved to bring color and flash to his feet. In 2010, he was fined $1,000 for wearing bright orange cleats during a game against the Marlins. (MLB then released a statement that player cleats must be at least 50% of the team's primary color, which for SF is black.) Wilson joked on the Jim Rome Show that the fine was for “having too much awesome on my feet”, and he continued to push the bar. After wearing custom cleats hand-painted by pop culture artist Jacob Patterson at the 2011 All-Star Game (see Lot 171), B-Weezy consulted the sneakerhead guru again for some Dodger Blue-themed kicks to wear with his new team in 2013. The results, offered here and Lot 183, were stunning.
Using a pair of Wilson’s Nike Huarache 2K5 cleats, Patterson painted a portrait of Wilson from early in the 2013 regular season on each lateral side divided by the Nike Swoosh. The medial side of the left shoe depicts former Dodgers pitcher Tommy John paying homage to Wilson’s two recoveries from Tommy John elbow surgery. The medial side of the right shoe features the iconic image of Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin Prison; the middle finger is slightly obscured by surrounding clouds to prevent the MLB from handing out another fine. Wilson’s Dodger uniform No. “00” is painted in white over the left toes, with a white “LA” on the right toes. The heels have a bearded icon of Wilson on the left, and the letter “B” on the right. Wilson’s right foot was prone to excessive toe drag while pitching, and the right shoe has a thick layer of dark plaster to repair and keep in the rotation for games. The metal spikes still have dirt stuck to them and the insoles exhibit heavy sock-sweating. The original white laces are present and interior Nike tagging indicates size 12.5 with the 2006 manufacturer date of these Huarache 2K5s.
All these unique 1-of-1 elements lead to dozens of easy photo-matches on Getty beginning in mid-September and lasting through the Dodgers’ playoff exit in the 2013 NLCS. We visually matched them to nine games: Sept. 15 vs. SF (Getty 180952661); Sept. 24 at SF (182277546); Sept. 29 vs. COL (184772269); Oct. 3 NLDS Game 1 at ATL (183051793); Oct. 4 NLDS Game 2 at ATL (183125405); Oct. 7 NLDS Game 4 vs. ATL (183715393); Oct. 11 NLCS Game 1 at STL (184192041); Oct. 14 NLCS Game 3 vs. STL (184635229); Oct. 16 NLCS Game 5 vs. STL (184797314).
Amazingly, in 17 career postseason outings, Brian Wilson never allowed an earned run. 18 innings, 10 hits, 7 BB and 25 K’s. A perfect 0.00 ERA. During the 2013 playoffs, he got through six scoreless innings as the 8th inning set-up man for the Dodgers. And he did it in style. Includes LOA signed by Brian Wilson.
Brian Wilson Collection
SCP is excited to present the Brian Wilson Collection with all items coming straight from Wilson himself. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2003 out of LSU, the 6’ 1” flame-thrower developed into a reliable big-league reliever and earned the closer’s job in 2008. Over the next four seasons, “B-Weezy” saved 163 games (most in MLB in that span) and earned three NL All-Star nods. Most importantly, he helped the Giants snap a 56-year title drought in 2010 and win their first World Series in San Francisco. Sporting a thick black beard, mohawk, tattoos and flashy cleats on the mound, Wilson was a fan favorite and true 1-of-1 with moxie, flair, and a big heart. His “Fear the Beard” mantra became a pop culture phenomenon in the Bay Area and beyond. After picking up his second World Series ring with the Giants in 2012, Wilson played his final two seasons with the Dodgers and settled in Los Angeles after retirement.
