During his heyday as the Giants All-Star closer, Brian Wilson used more than his thick black beard to get in opponents’ heads. “B-Weezy” is a sneaker lover who brought color and flash to his feet. In 2010, he was fined $1,000 for wearing bright orange cleats during a game against the Marlins. (MLB then released a statement that player cleats must be at least 50% of the team's primary color, which for SF is black.) Wilson joked on the Jim Rome Show that the fine was for “having too much awesome on my feet.”
This offered pair of Brian Wilson game-used Nike cleats is a relatively tame style by Weezy’s standards but certainly stands as one of his most significant. Resolution Photomatching was able to conclusively match them to five games from San Francisco’s magical 2010 championship run: 10/3 NL West clincher vs. SD; 10/8 NLDS Game 2 vs. ATL; 10/19 NLCS Game 3 vs. Philly; 10/20 NLCS Game 4 vs. Philly; and Game 1 of the World Series vs. Texas. Essentially, these were the only cleats he wore at AT&T Park with his home white uniform starting late in the 2010 regular season through the 2010 postseason.
The orange and black Nike Air Max Diamond Elite cleats show heavy use throughout. Wilson’s right foot was prone to excessive toe drag while pitching, and the right shoe has worn down in that area. The metal spikes and outsoles still hold plenty of mound dirt, and the insoles show significant sock-sweating. The original orange laces are present and interior Nike tagging indicates size 12.5 with the 2010 “Promo Sample” label. No pop culture artist was consulted for the design (unlike Lots 182 & 183). Instead, Wilson added his own personal touch by coloring in the black section with an orange marker. He signed both cleats on the outer mids in black marker with his No. “38” inscribed. The pair comes from his personal collection with an LOA signed by Wilson himself. Full photo-match paperwork included from ResMatch.
More on Wilson & 2010 World Series run
From 2008 through 2011, Brian Wilson saved 163 games (most in MLB over that span) for the Giants and made three NL All-Star teams. Early in the 2010 season, the jacked 6’ 1” righty grew his beard super thick and sported a mohawk, dying them both jet-black for an unforgettable on-field presence. His deadpan humor and antics off the mound made “Fear the Beard” a pop culture phenomenon in the Bay Area and beyond. More importantly, Weezy was dominant all season, saving an NL-best 48 games with a 1.81 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 74-2/3 innings as San Francisco won the NL West division with a 92-70 record. In the 2010 postseason, Wilson got even stingier. The Giants knocked off the Braves in the NLDS, beat the favored the Phillies in the NLCS, and defeated the Rangers in the World Series to win their first championship in San Francisco, snapping a 56-year title drought for the franchise. The colorful character closed out nine of the Giants’ ten playoff victories, including both the NLCS and Fall Classic, and did not allow a single earned run.
