- Lot Description
Frank Michael Carroll was the most decorated U.S. figure skating coach in history. He coached one Olympic champion, six Olympic medalists and 11 Olympians from five countries over 10 Olympics. He notably guided Americans Linda Fratianne, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek to World Figure Skating titles. Lysacek won the men's gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
“He made me believe that I could skate perfectly in the Olympics,” said Lysacek. “When I first heard the results, he was the first person I thought about. He owns just as much or more of my Olympic gold medal as I do.”
Kwan won nine U.S. titles (1996, 1998–2005), tied for the most ever, under his wing. She took silver at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and bronze at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
“He changed the lives of every skater and parent he came across,” said Kwan.
A graduate of Holy Cross, Frank Carroll won junior bronze medals at the 1959 and 1960 U.S. Championships. His coaching career spanned 60 years before he retired in 2018. Carroll was named 1997 Olympic Coach of the Year, and in 2007 he was enshrined in the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. This past June, Carroll passed away in Palm Springs at the age of 85.
Presented here is Frank Carroll’s 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics Team USA ring. The Ladies singles event was won American Sarah Hughes. Carroll’s pupil, Michelle Kwan, took the bronze. The striking 14-karat gold ring has the Olympic rings on the face flanked by two rows of three small-cut genuine diamonds. One side has the 2002 Winter Games legend and Olympics logo in raised relief. The other side has “USA” with the Olympic rings, “2002” and a snowflake. “Salt Lake City” is etched on each edge. Inside the band are “14K” and “cTo" (O.C. Tanner jewelry company) hallmarks. The size 9.5 ring weighs 16 grams and exhibits light wear. Consigned directly by the trustee of the Carroll estate.
