- Lot Description
The most capped German player of all time is Lothar Matthäus. Widely regarded as the best "box to box" midfielder of his era, he appeared in 150 international matches and scored 23 goals wearing the proud Deutschland jersey. In 1990, Matthäus won the prestigious Ballon d'Or after captaining West Germany to victory in the FIFA World Cup. The following year, he was selected as the inaugural FIFA World Player of the Year, and remains the only German to have won the award. One of just six players to appear in five World Cups (1982, '86, '90, '94 & '98), Matthäus was incredibly durable, consistent and versatile over a lengthy 20-year career (1980-2000). In 1999, at the age of 38, Matthäus transitioned to sweeper and was again named German Footballer of the Year. Diego Maradona described Matthäus as "the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him."
Offered here is Lothar Matthäus' Germany National Team jersey worn during the 1994 international season. The white, short-sleeved shirt has a German flag-themed black, red and yellow pattern on the shoulders. The Deutscher Fussball-Bund team crest is sewn on the left chest, with the Adidas patch on the right chest. Manufacturer tagging inside the ribbed, multi-colored collar indicates size large. The reverse has the player's large number "10" in black suede using a block shadowed font. The jersey style matches that of German international friendlies played before (Getty 541025315, 3/21/94 vs. Italy) and after (Getty 52919941, 11/16/94 vs. Albania) the '94 World Cup. The Germans were not able to repeat as World Cup champions as they were upset in the quarterfinals by Bulgaria. The shirt shows moderate wear with several loose threads on the 100% polyester fabric.
